It is debated. The last European possession in Africa became independent in 1980 (Zimbabwe). However, some African nations held non-self-governing territories after the last European colonies became independent. The only remaining territory considered by some to be a "colony" is West Sahara, which is controlled by Morocco.
Spain gave up on certain regions of Morocco (such as the northern region except Ceuta and Melilla and the southern region except for Ifni and Western Sahara) because French Morocco became an independent country. However, the year is off. This occurred in 1956, not 1953. In 1969, Spain gave Morocco the Ifni region after mounting international pressure and UNGA Resolution 2072. Spain also withdrew from Western Sahara in 1975, after which it was promptly occupied by Morocco in what is known as the Green March.
