If I remember correctly Kenya became independent on 12 December 1963. Although the first direct elections for native africans to the Legislative Council took place in 1957.

Kenya has it's own independence day, just like most countries. Also Called Jamhuri Day. Kenya gained it's independence from the UK on December 12, 1963. When Kenya was establishes as a Republic, Jomo Kenyatta became Kenya's president, in a year. The Kenyan African Democratic Union, a minority coalition, joined KANU in 1964. After president Kenyatta died on August 22, 1978, Vice President, Daniel Arap became interim president, and then on October 14, he was sworn into Presidency. Jamahuri Day falls on a weekend, but the following Monday may be off. They celebrate it by parading through streets and children go to statuims to watch matches, eat, and sing.
