Medusa and her sisters were cursed by the goddess Athena because Medusa was a lover of Poseidon. Athena was jealous (even though she is a virgin goddess) and was furious when Medusa and Poseidon went into one of her temples together. She made her very ugly and turned her lovely hair into snakes. Her unfortunate sisters also got the same curse. They were immortal but Medusa could get killed. Whenever someone looked at them directly, they were turned to stone. Later Perseus came and sliced of Medusa's head which could still turned people into stone.
