Here are a few properties of Basaltic Magma:

  • It is runny (less viscous) when compared to felsic magma
  • It contains Mafic minerals, or the ingredients of mafic minerals
  • It occurs largely at a divergent boundary between two oceanic plates and is the result of the melting of oceanic lithosphere
  • It rarely occurs at a convergent plate boundary between continental and oceanic crust

These things are commonly conceived as true, though there are likely to be exceptions (as mineralogy in rocks of the same type can still vary: even to a reasonably large extent).

Basaltic magma is magma of a composition that is low in silica (SiO2) and high in magnesium and iron, and has a high melting temperature and low viscosity compared to other types of magma. Basaltic magma is the most abundant type of magma on Earth. It commonly erupts volcanoes in an effusive or mildly explosive manner, often forming red hot lava flows. The lava cools to form a dark-colored, fine-grained rock called basalt. If it cools underground it will form a coarse-grained rock called gabbro. Common minerals in basalt and gabbro include pyroxene, calcium-rich plagioclase, and olivine.

These are also known as basic magmas which are rich in CaO, MgO and FeO. Rocks of this type have SiO2 values of 45 - 52% by weight. Basalt is an example of a basic rock.
