Think of the word as being a shortened way of saying "came upon or found by chance". I could say "I discovered the solution." This implies that I was actively looking for the solution, possibly in a research setting. I could say "I chanced upon the solution." This implies that the solution somehow came to me, or was given to me, without a lot of effort on my part.
