The word that best fits the definition is "circadian." Circadian rhythms are internal biological processes that follow a roughly 24-hour cycle, influencing behaviors such as sleep and feeding patterns, which determine whether an animal is nocturnal (active at night) or diurnal (active during the day).

The term circadian comes from the Latin words circa which means "around" and dies which means "day". The term circadian rhythm refers to the biochemical processes of an organism that occur over the duration of 24 hours. A circadian rhythm disorder is any disruption in a person's circadian rhythm.
Humans have a circadian rhythm that controls sleep and wakefulness.

Not exactly. Circadian rhythms are a subset of diurnal rhythms. Diurnal rhythms reoccur daily and can be circadian and non-circadian. Circadian rhythms can be set by the environment (entrainment), but are not dependent on environment stimulus for continuation (free-running) (ie. hormone secretion). Non-circadian rhythms are responsive to the environment, but still operate on a daily cycle (ie. the process of photosynthesis).
