Science fantasy was a term invented to accommodate some of the works of Jack Vance. It is where there are highly fanciful elements to a story that are attempted at being explained away by very pseudo-science. Also the fantastical elements are bound by adhering closely to the scientific rules that supposedly govern them, much more so than what would be found in a work of fantasy.
