An exoskeleton is the rigid outer cover of an insect that has the role of suppoting the body and protecting the soft inner tissue. In colloquial language you would call it a "shell". It is only found in insects as all other living creatures with bone structure have an endoskeleton, that is the skeleton is placed inside the body.
