Appears to be related to a low life female

companion, perhaps paid. Only reference I know is in "The Island of Sheep" by John Buchan, chapter 4.

There may be an Afrikaans or Dutch association as John Buchan has based his story

around the then Rhodesia.

The females referred to in the story are used as a distraction by the criminals and are referred to a "vrows" in a disparaging manner.
