You must know the mass and density to find volume. You must know the mass and volume to find density. You must know the volume and density to find mass. OF ANYTHING! at room temp. that is. This changes with pressure for gases. See the gas laws.

Density is equal to the mass of something divided by the volume. For example, if you have 7 grams of oxygen gas in a one liter container, the density would be 7 grams divided by 1 liter, so 7 grams per liter. However, you will probably face more difficult problems. Here is one from my science textbook:

A rectangular block has dimensions 2.9 cm X 3.5cm X 10.0 cm. The mass of the block is 615.0 g. What are the volume and density of the block?

The volume of a rectangular box is calcutated by multiplying length, width, and height. When we multiply 2.9 times 3.5 times 10.0, we get an answer of 101.5. The units for this would be cubic centimeters since we multiplied centimeters three times, so 101.5 cubic centimeters. To find the density, we have to divide the mass, 615.0 grams, by the volume, 101.5 cubic centimeters. This equals 6.06 grams per cubic centimeter.

Air has both mass and density, just like all forms of matter. A liter of air at sea level and at 0 Celsius has a mass of about 1.29 grams. Its density would then be 1.29 grams per liter.

One way to determine the density of air is to use a barometer.

---------

By weighing a known volume of air at standard conditions of temperature and pressure:

ρ=M/V
