There are several distinct forms of jousting, While each involve men on horseback, each require different equipment - Namely, distinctively shaped lances and helmets - and engaged it's riders in a different format. The forms included all'incontro, which was competed between two horsemen, alla barriera, in which two contestants, separated by a fence, charge one another, all'anello di bersaglio, in which the changing jouster attempted to grab a ring, alla quintana, in which the jouster charged a dummy made to resemble a human figure, often attached to a fence, and al saraceno, in which the bust of an armed warrior was placed on a column in the middle of the field.
