24K is 99.9% gold and is considered "pure gold"
22K is 91.3% is gold
etc...
The way karats works is:
each K is 1/24 part gold. So, 24K is 24/24 parts but 22K is only 22/24 parts. 18K is 18/24 parts and 10K is only 10/24 parts gold with 14/24 parts anything else.
24K isn't always "better" though. Gold is soft and some things need to be hard due to their intended use. A 24K ring will be easily damaged for example while a 10K will hold up to considerable wear.
22k refers to the amount of purity of gold alloys and it means that there is 91.67 percent pure gold and 24k gold is pure but too soft to use, so it is mixed with other metals to strengthen it.
Well, the difference between gold and gold overlay, is that the gold 24k it is pure yellow gold metal; and yellow gold alloys it is 22k thru 10k Rhodium Plated. But is not white gold plated. Because it is yellow gold alloy's include copper, and Rhodium plated. That it is gold overlay.
Pure gold is 24 karats (24K). 22K gold is almost, but not quite, pure. Some expensive jewelry, especially outside of the US, is composed of 22K gold. Additionally, American Gold Eagle bullion coins and South African Gold Krugerrands are 22K gold composition. Pure gold is .999 fine, while 22K gold is .9167 fine. That means it's 91.67% gold content by weight. You can determine the decimal fineness (as in .9167) by dividing the item's actual karatge by 24. ex. 22 / 24 = .9167 (rounded up)
24K gold is a pure substance but it is not suitable for making any items because it is too soft. Hence, we use copper or silver and mix it with 24K gold and make it 22K gold which is hard enough to be used. It is a mixture
Inspect the piece for official markings. A stamp will indicate either fineness (1-999 or .1-.999) or karat (10K, 14K, 18K, 22K or 24K). A magnifying glass will make this easier.
The difference is ONLY the volume of gold. 18K is a minimum of 75% pure gold 24K is a minimum of 99% pure gold The remainder being ANY other metal that can mix with it.

The abbreviation would be "1g Au" but it would not mean much without the purity (fine, 24K, 22K, 18K).
24k - 10k = 14k.
Karats which is what the K stands for it is the measurement used to inform the purity of the gold. Pure gold is 24K, most gold, is a mixture of gold and other metals. Karats are used to describe how many parts out of 24 are gold. 18 karat gold means 18/24 and 22 karats means 22/24 of the object is gold.

Yes, there is a difference between 1 gram of 18k gold and 24k gold. The difference between 1 gram of 18k and 24k gold are their purity as well as their worth. 24k(.999) gold is pure gold where as 18k(.750) isn't. You also have to know that the cost of a gram of gold is calculated first by knowing the price of a troy oz (oz) of gold. For example the price of one oz(31.1 grams) is $850 after you know how much the price is you divide the price of one oz by 31.1 grams giving you the cost of each gram after you do so if the gold is 24k then that is the cost per gram of 24k gold, if not you then take the answer you had for the 24k and multiple it for example to find the cost of 18k gold you multiple it by .750 and that is how much 1 gram of 18k gold costs. $850 / 31.1 = $27.33 (cost of 24k gold) $850 / 31.1 = $27.33 X .750 = $20.5 (cost of 18k gold) 24k(.999) 18k(.750) 14k(.585) 12k(.500) 10k(.417)
