The "carat" number in gold refers to the percentage of gold in the alloy. Gold rings are seldom pure gold because the metal is so soft that it scratches and bends easily. Most gold rings are 18 carat gold, refering to a specific percengage of gold and other metals that have been melted together to give it the color of gold while giving it additional strength. Once you get down to an alloy of 9 carat, there isn't really much gold in the metal. At that point, it's only 37.5% gold. But if you are planning on creating a larger ring, you can add more gold to it to bring the total amount of gold up to 75% of the total metal in the ring. For example, you could make the ring thicker.

there are 24 parts that make up pure gold. so 9 carats is 9 parts gold and 15 parts of another material so 9 parts gold to 24 parts is 37.5% gold. were 18 carat is 18 parts gold to 24 parts of another material or 75% gold. thus the difference is in the amount of gold in the ring. there is also a difference in the color of the gold pieces. the 9 carat gold is lighter than the 18 carat.
