What is the difference between Congo and timneh African grey parrots?

Congos and Timnehs are two widely recognized subspecies of the African Grey Parrot. The main differences are size and coloring, although this can vary. Timnehs are smaller, darker-feathered, have a darker tail, a pale upper mandible (almost pink), and a greyer eye. There is no difference in talking potential, although larger birds may have deeper voices. Many people have noted that Timnehs seem a bit less prone to nervous behaviors like feather-plucking. Congos are more often cited as exemplars of good talking and intelligence because they have been more popular and more well-studied. I own one actually. The difference between Congo’s and Timneh’s are that Congo’s have a red tail and are slightly bigger. I own a Congo.

My Timneh African Grey has a penis. The proper terminology is probably a phallus since it is probably more vestigial than usefule for sex. It is a slightly corkscrew shaped floppy noodle about a half inch long if you pull it out. You can see it hanging out immediately after he poops. Apparently this isn't well known even among bird people. I once went to a bird store to get some antibiotics because my bird had a cloacal infection and the swelling was preventing his penis from retracting. The people at the store were skeptical that African Greys have them.
