In the earliest gospel, Mark's Gospel, the author described Jesus as having extraordinary powers and had God call him his Son, but does not appear to have believed Jesus to be God, for example: 6:5: And he (Jesus) could there do no mighty work;10:18 Why call me good. There is none good but God.

The Gospels of Matthew and Luke report that Jesus had a divine birth, but still do not consider Jesus to be truly divine. It is only John's Gospel that finally had Jesus unambiguously call himself God.

Early Christians emphasised that Jesus was the Son of God and generally saw him as God, but they do not seem to have been sure how. Even in the fourth century, Arius said that Jesus, while divine, was inferior to God, while Bishop Alexander insisted that Jesus was of one substance with God. Out of this dispute came the declaration in the Nicene Creed that Jesus and God were of one substance, leading to acceptance of the doctrine of the Holy Trinity. However, it was not until the end of the fourth century that this dispute was finally resolved by decree of Emperor Theodosius.

So, the distinction between Jesus and God has its beginning in the earliest years of Christianity. Today, most Christians support the doctrine of the Holy Trinity, that teaches that God the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are three Gods in one God.

What does a intermediary do?

A Intermediary is the same thing as a mediator. I Timothy 2:5, "For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus". A mediator is a connecting link between two parties who want to come to an agreement. In the case of I Timothy 2:5 talking about Salvation Jesus Christ was the connecting link between God and men. Jesus was the perfect mediator as he possessed the nature and attributes of God (He was the Son of God and God Himself) and He (Jesus) was fully a Human Being. Jesus was the God/Man and so was the perfect Mediator. He mediates peace between God and any man who comes to God through Jesus Christ.

Who is the central figure in Christianity, Jesus or Jesus Christ, and what is the significance of this distinction in the faith?

The central figure in Christianity is Jesus Christ. The significance of this distinction is that "Jesus" refers to the historical figure, while "Jesus Christ" emphasizes his divinity and role as the savior in Christian belief. This distinction highlights the dual nature of Jesus as both human and divine, which is a core tenet of the Christian faith.
