Notepad is just a text editor so it does not have all the facilities Microsoft Word has, like spell checking, formatting, the ability to put tables in or graphics in, do mail merges etc. It is purely for entering unformatted plain text, not for writing letters and producing fancy documents. Microsoft Word is a full wordprocessing application, so has many more capabilities. Notepad is plaintext format, Microsoft Word is richtext format. Microsoft Word has more options on what to do and how to type. Word is a powerful and complex word processor with many more commands and capabilities. It can also import and export a much greater variety of formats and deal with things like graphics, which Notepad cannot do.

Note pad and Word pad are two very different programs.

Firstly, Word pad is simply the free word processor you get with windows. it is used for writing letters, etc. and uses a formatting system to write. All it is, is a word processor.

Note pad however, is very different.

Note pad may seem like a useless program for simply writing notes or rubbish in it, but it can actually be used as a powerful program and website writer.

With notepad, you can create entire websites with HTML or create things like messages boxes with vbs files.

Microsoft Word is a full featured word processor, so there are many things it can do that Wordpad can't, like dealing with images, spell checking, mailmerges and many other things, too many to list in full.

Wordpad is a very basic word processor, but for a lot of what you would do with Word, like type a simple letter, you could use Wordpad.

Wordpad is much more limited in what it can do compared to Microsoft Word. For very simple documents you could use Wordpad. It has basic formatting such as fonts and colours and sizes. It does not have facilities like spell checkers or mail merge. Notepad is a very basic editor. Wordpad is between Notepad and Microsoft Word in terms of its functionality. It comes as part of Windows, whereas you have to buy Microsoft Word, which is part of Microsoft Office.
