PageMaker is a layout program. MS Word is a word processor. Word is better at correcting spelling and grammar mistakes. PageMaker is better at putting text where you want it on a printed page. (Word trys hard at being a layout program, but it isn't and that causes a lot of trouble, especially when Word tries so hard at guessing what you want to do that it re-formats your text to try and squeeze it into what it thinks you might want - which in my case is almost never what I want).
Pages from Apple is very similar to Microsoft Word. Apple has Numbers which is similar to Microsoft Excel. Apple does not have a database product similar to Access.

There are definitely differences in the companies. They are in constant competition with each other. One huge difference between the Microsoft and Apple organization cultures is secrecy. Apple has rumors fly about and Microsoft leaks previews of their stuff.
