While the Spanish bullfight is made by a single man facing the bull called "torero" with a sword on his hand, the portuguese "tourada" or "toirada" is made on horseback. In the Portuguese variety (which i Know better) there is also a confrontation between a group of man standing in line and bearehanded and defying the bull into charge. They are called "forcados". The horseback tourada is historically more aristocratic since it was made by cavaleiros who would usually own horse perform before the Royal Court. IT was reserved for the noble places. The forcados was intensily more popular and performed by the lower classes in different sites. The fist ennances the beaty and bravery of the horse and the seconde ennances the sheer bravery of men.
Whilst the spanish variety is kind of dance between man and beast, a sensual tango of death and the it's extreme defiance, the portuguese shows more often a dance between two animals or the bravery show.
In the spanish variety the bull is killed onsite with a stoke of the sword. Is has no protection against the sharped horns In the portuguese one the bull is merely wounded and later killed in the burchery of the arena. There is protection against the horns
