What is the difference between The or the?

The has a capital 'T' but a small 'the' does not.

The one with a capital T begins a sentence.

The one with a small 't' can be used anywhere in a sentence, except as the first word of the sentence.

Examples:

The postman arrived at the post office for the workday.

He sorted the mail at the post office.

After sorting the mail at the post office, the worker packed it into trays for delivery and loaded the trays into his truck.

The post office calls sorting mail by hand "casing the mail".

The postman usually cases the mail between 4a.m. and 5a.m.

The post man then enters his truck and starts to make the deliveries.

Postal workers may need to walk the route they are assigned, or some workers drive the route and never get out of the truck.
