Interesting question.

Visual Display Terminal and Visual Display Unit.

Many years ago computer terminals (the thing you sit in front of and type) were based on Teletypes - ie there was a mechanical keyboard which printed your typing on paper as the keystrokes were sent over the wire to the computer. the computers responses were also typed on the same paper. (sometimes confusing).

To improve speed and save on paper the display of the user input and computer output was changed to be on a screen. On some this was orange print, on other makes it was green. The original devices were text only - no graphics. This was called a VDT to distinguish them from the old physical terminals. The term VDU came into common use a few years later as graphics became available. An employee with a VDT could only work with text, one with a VDU also had (limited) graphics support.

The terms today are pretty much interchangeable and as far as I know VDT is more or less an obsolete term.
