A counsellor is a person who has taken a course (certificate, diploma or degree) in a therapy method that usually involves taking with and listening to the emotional or life problems of their "client". A psychiatrist is a licensed medical doctor (with a medical degree) who has undertaken a period of post-graduate education to become a psychiatrist and is able to prescribe medications and generally works with those "patients" who have mental diseases or disorders.

∙ 15y agoA psychologist has a college or university degree in psychology. Often, they have a PhD degree. A therapist usually does not have a degree, but has training in ways to be an effective counselor. Either one can be very helpful in helping you with mental problems like depression or anxiety. A psychologist is usually the most helpful in dealing with more serious illnesses, or with specialized problems.

∙ 14y agoThey are basically the same thing. A counselor is defined as an individual practitioner, therapist, or analyst who engages in the practice of therapy or counseling for a fee. The counselor/therapist degree is a Masters of Arts or Masters of Sciences degree.
You might be thinking of the difference between a therapist and a social worker. A social worker does the same sort of job, but has a degree in social work instead (it can be a Masters or Doctorate).
