Being in a coma is called a comatose state, characterized by a deep unconsciousness from which a person cannot be woken up.
An unconscious state is typically referred to as being "unconscious" or in a state of "unconsciousness". This means that the person is not aware of their surroundings or able to respond to stimuli.
A light coma is present when reflex motor responses (i.e. decorticate and decerebate) can be elicited by noxious (adversive) stimulation. With a deep coma, there is no response to any sort of stimulus.

Once the original ailment is cured, the coma will lose effect, however a coma can last for weeks and months on end.
