A digital cable dvr is different from a vcr because one takes VHS tapes, and the other records tv shows digitally to a hard drive so you can watch them later.

Does a DVD recorder with a digital tuner allow you to record one channel while watching another channel?

It depends on the set you are watching on and your cable service. If you have a cable service that sends in all channels, digital and analog, without the need for a set top box, then you can get all the channels available if your DVR and television both have digital tuners built into them. If your DVR does not have a digital tuner, it will only be able to pick up the standard channels and not the "virtual" channels available through digital service (i.e. 8.1 or 17.4, etc.). If the DVR does have a digital tuner, but you are still watching on an old analog CRT television set, then you won't be able to watch the virtual channels while the DVR is recording, since the old TV won't pick up those in between channels. So, the answer is, if you have a set with a digital tuner, and a DVR with a digital tuner, you will be able to watch any channel while recording any other channel, as long as they are not encoded. If one of the two does not have a digital tuner, then your watching selection will be limited to what it can pick up.

Does a digital cable DVR take bandwith away from Cable Internet?

Not really. Your DVR records a frequency (channel) that's already there. It's really not much different than a VCR, except that it's a bit computerized and records your programs in a digital format, usually on an internal hard drive like the ones found in computers.

What does DVR stand for?

A DVR is a Digital Video Recorder. It's like a VCR, but instead of using a tape it records and plays back video digitally. It works like your computer, with a hard drive that stores the information. TiVo is the most popular DVR. It was one of the first on the market. These days there are other competing brands of DVRs, and many cable companies have started offering DVR services. Essentially, they've built a DVR into your cable box and then sell you the ability to use it as an added option (generally for $10 a month or so). The cable-company option requires no hardware since the DVR receiver is integrated with your program menu, so it can be cheaper.

Does it cost extra to use my own DVR with cable?

It would not cost extra to use your own DVR with cable from a cable company. However, you would need to make sure you are using a different DVR than what your cable company provides when you order DVR through them. As many times it is common their will be a code to input in order to use the DVR feature, this is the main reason for the need of having a different DVR.
