What is the difference between a dsi and a dsi XL?

If you already own a DSi, the DSi XL is probably not for you. That's not to say it's not for anyone; it's the same device as the DSi, just bigger. And that's it: it's for people who want bigger.

As stated, the XL's screen is just bigger than the DSi's screen. It's not noticeably better or brighter. It might be a tiny bit whiter than the DSi I have, but I'm not sure if that's just due to age, or that the color is just ever-so-slightly more white. In any case, it's negligible.

Because of its larger bulk, the DSi XL feels more solid than the DSi or the DS Lite. Instead of an all-around matte finish, the top is a glossy, fingerprint-attracting smooth surface, whereas the bottom is a more grippy matte affair.

Unless you insist on carrying around your DS in your pocket at all times, the DSi XL isn't atrociously larger than its predecessor. It's still a portable device that you can easily pull in and out when you want to play. And yes, it still does fit into pockets, if pants are where you want to store it.

The main difference is that the 3DS XL is larger, making the top screen 90% bigger, and thus a better 3D effect experience. It does fit better on your hands, unless you have very tiny ones (like children).

It also has other minor changes like a slightly bigger battery capacity, rounded edges (so it doesn't hurt the player when playing for extended play sessions), improved screen for playing outdoors (so it doesn't get too dark and it also cuts the glare), a matte finish that doesn't get your fingerprints everywhere, a more convenient position for the stylus, the audio jack and the LEDs for Power and recharging, longer and more obvious buttons for SELECT, HOME and START, better feel of the shoulder buttons, the 3D slider is not loose anymore, with actually having a "click" so you don't accidentally turn it on, no screen scratching when folding the console (unlike the original) and a 4GB SDHC card (instead of a 2GB one).

You should only choose the original for portable reasons and if you prefer its overall design but the XL model is only $30 more expensive.
