The World-Wide Web, like many hypertext systems, is based upon a markup language, in which authors annotate text to describe the texts role or appearance. There are two different views of markup, logical markup and physical markup. HTML has some logical tags and some physical tags.

While physical tags are also referred to as presentational mark-up, logical tags are useless for appearances. Physical tags are newer versions while logical tags are old and concentrate on content.

Tags define elements. The P tag introduces a paragraph. The H4 tag introduces a fourth-level heading. A P element does not require a closing tag in HTML, but does in XHTML.
The head tag includes everything you would you would usually put in the header of a website. ie name, company picture etc. However the title tag is a tag you can place inside the head tag to say what the title of the website is going to be. The main difference is the head tag can have multiple tags within in whereas the title tag is a tag that can go inside a head tag

A container tag has two ends (an opening and a closing) whereas an empty tag doesn't. The paragraph tag is an example of a container tag: <p>Our paragraph text here.</p> The image tag is a good example of an empty tag. <img src="logo.png" alt="Yay!"> See how the initial paragraph tag (<p>) has a corresponding end tag? The text in between is "contained" by the tag.
