You can have a story that is both, actually. A mystery story involves some sort of crime which must be solved. Science Fiction is the story of "what if" - usually involving some sort of new technology, but always a story of how things might be/might have been "if...."
Nora Roberts writes a very popular mystery/science fiction series under the name of J.D. Robb, and Charlaine Harris writes mysteries involving vampires, werewolves, and a psychic waitress named Sookie Stackhouse (you might have seen those on HBO as Trueblood).
