Portrait is a rectangle that is shorter on the top and bottom and longer on the sides, (like a portrait) and landscape is longer on the top and bottom and shorter on the sides like you would paint a picture of a landscape.

Portrait has the long edge running vertically, while landscape has it running horizontally.

The Microsoft definition of "portrait" is the orientation of a page such that the longest edge is vertical and the shorter edge is horizontal. The alternative is "landscape" where the long edge is horizontal and the vertical edge is the short one. If you think about it, that means that if the page is perfectly square, there is no difference between portrait and landscape.
Go to the File menu and then Page Setup. You will find the option to change between Landscape and Portrait there.
Portrait and Landscape take their names from the way paintings of those two types are. Both are rectangular, but a portrait is usually higher than it is wide and a landscape is wider than it is high. As printing paper is rectangular too, portrait and landscape determine which way on the page spreadsheets, or other types of documents, are printed. Portrait is the standard way, but sometimes you may want to have things printed in landscape mode, so you will want to see how it looks before printing. That is where portrait and landscape views come in.
Portrait means that the longest side is vertical, as in an 8.5x11 inch sheet of paper, the 8.5 inch sides are on top and bottom, the 11 inch sides are right and left. Landscape means that the longest side is horizontal, so turn the paper ninety degrees.
One will display and print your document on the piece of paper with the sides being the long edges and the top and bottom being the short edges (portrait), while the other will orient the words so the sides are the short edges and the top and bottom are the long edges (landscape).
Click File, Page Setup, then select the Landscape view instead of the default Portrait view
This is not a gardening question this is photographic. A landscape picture is longer than it is high, a portrait is the opposite.
