A counsellor is a person who has taken a course (certificate, diploma or degree) in a therapy method that usually involves taking with and listening to the emotional or life problems of their "client". A psychiatrist is a licensed medical doctor (with a medical degree) who has undertaken a period of post-graduate education to become a psychiatrist and is able to prescribe medications and generally works with those "patients" who have mental diseases or disorders.
A psychologist has a college or university degree in psychology. Often, they have a PhD degree. A therapist usually does not have a degree, but has training in ways to be an effective counselor. Either one can be very helpful in helping you with mental problems like depression or anxiety. A psychologist is usually the most helpful in dealing with more serious illnesses, or with specialized problems.
They are basically the same thing. A counselor is defined as an individual practitioner, therapist, or analyst who engages in the practice of therapy or counseling for a fee. The counselor/therapist degree is a Masters of Arts or Masters of Sciences degree.
You might be thinking of the difference between a therapist and a social worker. A social worker does the same sort of job, but has a degree in social work instead (it can be a Masters or Doctorate).
difference between Psychologists, Counselors Therapists,
Counseling can be a stepping stone to being a psychologist. The difference is the degree. A counselor only needs a masters, while a psychologist needs a doctorate since psychologist are doctors who specify in the study of psychology in whatever area of psychology that they chose to study or practice in. I guess the true similarity in a psychologist and a counselor is that they both study and practice in psychology. A counselor can work for a psychologist. That's about it.
Well my friend has an aunt that studies psychology. She says that the difference is that psychologists study psychology and therapists study therapy. :)
A counsellor is just a therapist, not trained as psychiatrists or psychologists. A psychotherapist is someone who deals with people with psychological disorders.
The difference is the level of education. You can become a counselor several ways. For example, you can get a masters degree in social work and be a licensed clinical social worker, or get a masters degree in pastoral counseling or school counseling. A psychologist has a PhD. FYI, a psychiatrist is an MD.

Please take a look at the following link. It lists out the main differences among the mental health professionals. http://www.behavioral-care.com/SocialWorker-Counselor-Marriage-Family-Therapist-Psychologist.html
Well a message therapist uses messages to help you and a physical therapist uses physical exercises to help you.
What's the difference between a Counselor, Therapist and Psychotherapist? This is primarily a question of semantics. Traditionally, those with an LPC license call themselves Counselors, those with an LCSW call themselves Therapists, and those with a MD, PhD or PsyD call themselves Psychotherapists. If these terms are defined narrowly, a Counselor outlines problems, finds solutions, helps in decision making, and provides educational information; a Psychotherapist does in-depth analysis of a client's psychological makeup. However, all these professionals usually do both kinds of therapy to some degree.
Counselor or counsellor are both correct spellings. A counselor can refer to a person who provides counseling or one who is a diplomat. A counsellor can refer to the royal family in the UK.
