I like to refer to the difference this way...accounting is putting things together and auditing is ripping it apart.

The accountant is the one to ensure that the books and records have all the financial information in the proper order and amount. They may also take on the role of a financial advisor for the business when it comes to investing and such, but this is not "accounting" per se.

Auditing is working from the completed books and records to ensure that they proeprly reflect generally accepted accounting principals, or if it is a compliance audit (e.g., tax audit) that the amounts reported are accurate. The auditor works backward from what you put on a final return by looking through the books and records.
