Atmospheric and oceanographic sciences generally differentiate between vertical convection and horizontal advection. These disciplines study the atmosphere and the oceans which are both much wider in the horizontal than they are thick in the vertical. Making the distinction between horizontal (i.e. isopycnal, along surfaces of constant density) and vertical (i.e. diapycnal, through density surfaces) therefore makes sense for meteorologists and oceanographers.

In fluid mechanics on the other hand the terminology is often used interchangeably. Their study environment is frequently a tank in a laboratory and therefore is more of a cube compared to the thin oceanic layer on the Earth. In fluid mechanics, advection and convection is the same.

Both advection and diffusion move the pollutant from one place to another,

but each accomplishes this differently.

The essential difference is:

- Advection goes one way (downstream);

- Diffusion goes both ways (regardless of a stream direction).

This is seen in the respective mathematical expressions:

- Advection u∂c/∂x has a first-order derivative,which means that if x is replaced by -x the term changes signs (anti-symmetry);

- Diffusion D∂2c/∂x2 has a second-order derivative,

which means that if x is replaced by -x the term does not change sign (symmetry).

The difference between advection and convection usually varies if the problem under consideration is related to heat and mass transfer, or in the field of atmospheric science.

In heat and mass transfer, convection is a more general term than advection. In other words, you could simply say Convection = Diffusion + Advection.

How is heat transfered in convection?

Convection is the movement of molecules in fluids. The heat transfer takes place through diffusion and advection. Convection refers to the sum of diffusive and advection transfer. Example includes hurricanes. As far as heating winds the sun warms the earth which in turn warms the air and the warmer air expands becoming less dense than the surrounding air mass. The lighter air rises and it cools due to its expansion at high-altitude pressures.

How does heat transfer within the earth by the advective method?

Magma can be displaced by the movement of surrounding rocks (advection), rather than rising and falling as it is heated and cooled (convection).

What is the process of warm air rising and cool air sinking called?

The process of warm rising and cool air sinking is called convection. Convection is the concerted, collective movement of groups or aggregates of molecules within fluids and rheids, either through advection or through diffusion or as a combination of both of them.

What is the differ of conduction and convection?

conduction by itself is slower to heat but conduction and convection is faster to heat

The movement of molecules from high concentration to low concetration?

Well there are several terms to describe that process depending on the circumstances. These terms include osmosis, diffusion, convection and advection

How heat transfer between the equator and poles?

This is caused by convection, in which warm, less-dense air rises, and flows toward the poles until it cools and sinks again.
