the major difference is lung volume & its capacity. In basic daily life people dosent go for exercise and workout sessions but for an athelete 18hours are the main stamina building time because if the lungs capture more o2 then heart has to pump for the same power to meet the breathing capacity thats y heart started slower and lungs capacity increased also elasticity to hold the exchange in alveolies. Hence, atheletes lungs and heart are slower or bradicardic than normal peoples lungs.
