A boot sector virus is just basically a virus that infects the boot system; they usually like to overwrite and/or edit the boot files so they can wipeout or play tricks on your computer on the next boot. A file virus on the other hand just infects files and makes them useless. They can range from overwriting basic video files to deleting critically important files.
