Cold War was the name of the game. Containment was a movement.

Example: If a communist tank advanced 100 yards towards the border; an allied tank would counter that move...in an effort to containment any movement.

If a communist jet entered neutral airspace, an allied jet might want to accompany it upon it's flight.

If a communist vessel cruised the seas, an allied vessel would screen it (follow it/shadow it).
