The formula is for compound that have more than one type of elements that joind together. EX. (H2O) is the formula of water.

But the symbol is for one element. EX. (C) is the symbol of carbon.

Formula is the singular form of formulae and formulas, it depends which English you're speaking. e.g British English or American English.
