Counseling skills are primarily communication skills. They focus on eliciting information and guiding, as opposed to flooding conversations with our own ideas and interests. They involve understanding and application of a variety of techniques and counseling theories. Counseling is bringing those skills to bear on specific problems, and helping people to work their way through them. Essentially the counselor guides the discussion to avoid dead-ends and encourage the client to approach problems in a productive, healthy way, using skills and techniques appropriate to the situation.
