Continuous data can take all possible values between two values while discrete data cannot.

For example,

you can have desk that is 1 metre long or 1.2 metres or 1.2035 m or anything (provided you have instruments to measure with sufficient accuracy). But you can have only one child or 2 children or 3, etc. You cannot have 2.3 children!

### What is the difference between discrete and continuous data?

Discrete variables have numbers that can be counted. Continuous
data is measurable. Discrete data are data which can only take on a
finite or countable number of values within a given range.
Continuous data are data which can take on any value. It is
measured rather than counted. The mass of a given sample of iron is
continuous; the number of marbles in a bag is discrete.

### What is the difference between continuous sampling and discrete sampling?

Continuous data is data that can theoretically be any amount at
all. There may be a maximum and minimum value, but all numbers in
between are possible. For instance, the amount of time it takes to
complete a task, might be 13.4864 seconds. This makes the time
continuous data.
Discrete is data that can only be set amounts. For instance, how
much money someone has, or how many times they've been to the
cinema. You cannot have 13.4864 cents, or have visited...

### Discrete and Continuous data is used in mathematics?

Yes it is. Discrete data is something that's set. Like say you
were making a line graph about renting bikes. You can only rent
whole bikes there is nothing in between. You shouldn't connect
points on a line graph with discrete data but some cases can be
argued.
Continuous data is usually a measurement that could change like
time.

### Is a bar graph discrete or continuous?

It is both, a bar graph can be for discrete and continuous it
depends on how you set out the chart. If it is for discrete data
then you have to have a gap between each bar but on a continuous
bar graph they are all next to each other WITHOUT any gaps. Also
another way to discover if a bar graph is discrete or continuous
the dicrete graph bars are labelled individually but on a
continuous they are not labelled...

###### Asked in Statistics

### Can normal distridution apply on discrete data?

Yes, If you have a large data set, you can approximate the
discrete data by Normal distribution (which is continuous). An
example would be,
"A coin is tossed 1000 times. What is the probability of rolling
between 300 and 400 heads?" This problem, usually solved by
Binomial distribution (which is a discrete distribution), is very
difficult to solve because of the large data set and can be
approximated by the Normal distribution.
