Serfs were bound to the soil on which they lived. They were not exactly slaves, because they were free except for certain obligations they had to work on the manorial lands. They could not be bought or sold, but they were not allowed to quit and find other work or move away from the manor. In exchange for this, they got a place to live, a plot to farm, and protection.

Freemen could live where they wanted and do what they wanted, but they had to feed themselves and provide a place to live for themselves and protect themselves. Their lives were easier than those of serfs in good times. In bad times they lacked the serf's security.
