The police CHARGE you with a crime when they arrest you. The information on you and the offense gets sent to the Grand Jury which, if they believe the information presented to them, INDICTS you.

An "indictment" means that your case (the one for which you have been arrested) has been presented to a judge or a grand jury and the prosecutor has demonstrated that there is enough convincing evidence against you to warrant your being proscecuted in court.
