A person ingests food and drink by chewing and/or swallowing After someone ingests something, the substance begins to work its way through the gastrointestinal tract in the process called digestion.
Digestion is the process of breaking down food into smaller, soluble components that can be absorbed into the bloodstream. It is a form of catabolism - breaking food molecules down. Without digestion, the body cannot use the nutrients in food.
Egestion is the discharge of undigested material or faeces from the digestive tract via the anus. Egestion refers solely to indigestible matter which is never absorbed into the cells -
