The hawk and kingfisher are different species of birds. The hawk (many sub-species) hunt other birds and small animals (mice, voles, etc), while a kingfisher eats small fish, frogs, and other aquatic creatures - caught by the kingfisher diving beneath the water.

  • Kingfishers are carnivores with long, straight beaks for catching their prey. Parrots are herbivores, with sharp, curved beaks perfect for cracking open seeds and nuts. Some also have rounded tongues which they use for collecting nectar from flowers.
  • Parrot species, in general, have a wider variety of bright colours than kingfishers, which rely on camouflage and hence have less vivid colours.
  • Parrots are capable of flying erratically in order to avoid predators: they can twist and turn quickly. Kingfishers are more suited to straight flying.
  • Parrots have feet which are able to grip and climb trees. Kingfishers do not have this facility.
