A protagonist is the single character whom a given story is about. The protagonist is, therefore, not just a main character, but the main character. Whereas the term main character could refer to any character to whom the author has devoted some significant amount of wordage. Some novels have thirty main characters.

Main characters refer to the central figures in a story, while protagonists specifically refer to the character whose actions drive the plot forward and who typically faces the primary conflict or challenge in the story. In most cases, the main character and the protagonist are the same, but not always.
