It completely depends on the usage. Many projects could be best built with a combination of the two.

Plywood is lighter and will not split when edge nailing.

A MDF edge gives you extra options for a finished product for doors and drawers.

MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) is made by effectively pulping hard and soft woods into fibres and them pressing them together with a resin/binder to for a solid lump of material.

Plywood is made from thin layers of wood glued together with their grains alternating which makes it less susceptible to warming and bending.

Generally plywood is generally used for exterior applications as it is not affected by moisture to the same degree as other wood. MDF is more suitable for indoor applications, particularly if you are going to place a veneer on. If MDF gets wet it will swell and break. MDF is also less friendly on your saw blades, dulling them faster.
