Organic cotton is grown without any fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides or fungicides. These are toxic chemicals that pollute the earth, cause genetic defects, and have been linked to cancer. Non-organic means that chemicals are used in the process of growing the cotton.

Cotton provides half of the world's fiber needs. Although it is a hugely popular fabric, it is also very tough on the environment. The process of growing and manufacturing cotton leeches nutrients out of the soil at high levels, demands enormous quantities of water, and requires many gallons of fossil fuels to plant, harvest and process into fabric.

Then there's organic cotton, which is grown without pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, chemical fertilizers or any other chemicals. (Conventional cotton is one of the most chemically-dependent crops, sucking up 10 percent of all agricultural chemicals and 25 percent of insecticides on 3 percent of our arable land; that's more than any other crop per unit.)

But, like conventional cotton, growing organic cotton involves a tremendous amount of waste. Up to 40% of the cotton product, organic and otherwise, is discarded between the field and manufacturer, often ending up in our landfills.

Fortunately, new technology has developed that allows for recycling cotton waste into cloth. Waste is gathered from every stage of cotton processing and then turned into cloth. You can now buy t-shirts and tote bags made from recycled cotton (check outsmartwaste.com). As the technology for producing recycled cotton continues to grow, it will help lessen the impact of farming cotton on our already stressed out planet.
