∙ 11y agoThe difference between what one person calls a semi-precious stone and another calls a precious stone varies! It has to do with the clarity, rarity, and the hardness.
One opal may be extremely beautiful. It may fetch an extremely high price. It is still considered semi-precious because it has a hardness of 6. A ruby is precious with a hardness of 9 and a diamond with a hardness of 10. At one time a clear stone with a hardness of 8 and above made it precious.
A flawed diamond with a hardness of 10 could only be used for industrial purposes and was not a precious stone.

Prior to the development of commercial pearl cultivation in the early 20th century, pearls were very rare and considered amongst the most precious of gems. Today, with mass cultivation of pearls from Japan, China, Australia and other parts of South East Asis, consumers are able to purchase pearls at a variety of price points from under $100 to many thousands of dollars depending on size and quality.
