There really is no difference except the actual name itself. Both serve alcohol and food, and are social gathering places. In the UK, the term pub is more commonly used, and barsis more commonly used in the US. Certain bar owners in the US call their establishments pubs to let the public know they serve British food and usually offer good quality European ales, which may or may not be found in average bars.
