GSM stands for Global System for Mobile, while CDMA stands for Code Division Multiple Access. GSM uses SIM cards which store the phone number and information and runs off of Towers and requires more steps to connect a call, which results in poor call quality. CDMA goes through calls much quicker, and it can penetrate buildings better than GSM.

What is the difference between unlocking a phone and flashing a phone?

Unlocking usually refers to a GSM network and flashing usually refers to CDMA networks. When you unlock a phone you can use it on any carrier that uses the same radio (GSM/CDMA), or if you have a world phone, either a GSM or CDMA. Flashing the phone just allows you to use one specific CDMA carrier.

How do i switch phones with a CDMA phone?

This cannot be done unless you change the hardware itself. CDMA and GSM are two different technologies used by the carriers and it's a difference in the hardware that makes it not possible for you to convert a CDMA phone on GSM, or vice versa. i just bought a htc evo 4g and its a cdma phone.I am taking it along with me to Europe and i know it may not be used there, but a friend of mine told me it could be converted to gsm only if a space behind the phone can be created and also other features would be formated before i start using it.so i think cdma could be converted to gsm

I have an unlockedsmart/pda cell phone, now can any of these companies activate for it on their set up plans, either prepaid or postpaid?

It depends on what type of phone it is, GSM, or CDMA. You can tell the difference between the two, fairly easily: GSM phones take a SIM card, while CDMA do not : If it's a GSM phone, AT&T would be a provider, as would T-Mobile. If it's CDMA, Verizon would be your best bet!

Can you put the CDMA sim card to the gsm phone?

CDMA and GSM are Radio technologies and mobile Phone is just an Antenna to receive these Radio Signals. Since both the technologies work on different frequency range and has different modulation shemes therfore the mobile phones for both are different.Apart from this 3G tehchnology which is combination of both GSM and CDMA (WCDMA) is compatible with both GSM and CDMA. So a 3G mobile can serve for both GSM and CDMA radio signals.SIM (Subcriber Idendity Module) is consists of Credential for network authorization. Since Both GSM and CDMA technologies has different Authorization functions and parameters hence both SIMs are different. Note: In CDMA technology SIM is often called as RUIM (Removable User Idendity Module).CDMA uses Different Frequencies than GSM. CDMA also does not require a SIM card. Now some companies do provide SIM cards for CDMA connections also, such as Reliance communications and TATA Indicomm in India.CDMA can hold more calls per channel on their towers, while GSM drops alot of calls. That is why people are always complaining about T-Mobile and At&t dropped calls. GSM is used internationally while CDMA is mostly used in the domestic United States. CDMA carriers are Verizon, Alltel, Sprint, Cricket....while GSM carriers here in the U.S. are T-Mobile and At&t.

What is the most striking difference between GSM and CDMA technology?
