Labels are text or numbers you type into a cell, while values are the results of calculations you view in a cell.

Examples:

  • If you type the word NAME in a cell, you will see NAME (label).
  • If you type =6+4 in a cell, you will see 10 (value).

A label is a piece of text in a cell that often indicates what another value or a row or columns of values are. So in a cell above a column of your sales figures, you could have the label Sales. Beside the total of the sales, you could have a label like Total Sales.

A name refers directly to a cell or a range of cells. Using the previous example, the range of cells that have the sales figures in them could be given the name Sales. If they were in the cell range from C2 to C20 you could get the total sales by using the cell range or the name in a SUM function like this:

=SUM(C2:C20)

=SUM(Sales)

You could also give a name to the cell that has the total and call it something like Total_Sales. Note the use of the underscore character between the words to keep it as a single item, as Excel will think it is two things if a space is left. Using names can make formulas easier to understand and can be handier than trying to remember cell references. It also reduces the likelihood of errors, as if people use a cell range, they might mistakenly type it in wrong.

A label is just a heading to indicate what a value relates to. A value can be a number or a date or some other type of data. A formula is a calculation to do some activity and can involve a function.

Labels are normally headings over cells that have values in them. So in A1 you could have the word Sales. From A2 down you would have numbers, which would be the values of those sales. Sales in A1 is acting as a label for the values, so that you know what they are. If you have a lot of things in a spreadsheet you would want to know what they are all for, so you would use labels to help you.
