"Big black ants" are likely to be common garden ants. Carpenter ants are a completely different species, larger and found in different surroundings.

Garden ants of a number of subspecies are the common pests associated with spoiling picnics and invading sandboxes. Some are black, but others are varying shades of brown and red, fading to tan. They thrive on carbohydrates, especially sugars, and tend to congregate within range of such food sources. The ants you see in your kitchen or on your picnic table are likely to be common garden ants.

Carpenter ants are named for their appetite for wood. They nest in tree trunks and in the framing lumber of buildings. Like termites, they devour wooden members from the inside out, creating 'galleries' inside a log or board. Unlike termites, however, they are not particularly sensitive to light and are able to migrate freely without tunnels or other protective structures.

There are hundreds of different kinds of red ants and hundreds of kinds of black ants. Some are big, some small, some fierce, some not, some sting, some don't. All bite. Many ants species of the one colour just happen to be very much like many species of the other colour.

I wonder whether you are talking about the black Formicakinds of ants and the red-brown Polyergus ants; Polyergus collect the workers of some kinds of black Formica ants to work for them. People call the Polyergus slave-making ants.
