Reptiles have scales, nearly all lay eggs with hard shells, and breath air. Eg. snakes, lizards and turtles.
Amphibians, have smooth skin, lay eggs that are soft and start life as an aquatic juvenile. Examples include frogs, salamanders and caecilians.

Reptiles (snakes, lizards, crocodiles etc) breathe using lungs. If they are underwater they have to come to the surface to breathe. Amphibians (frogs, newts, salamanders etc) are NOT reptiles. There is a world of difference between the two, surprisingly. A salamander is an order of amphibians, being creatures that habituate on land as well as in the water. Whist a lizard is a suborder of scaled reptiles. Reptiles are not aquatic, the main difference, I suppose, would be their class.
