The difference between mule deer and white tale deer is that mule deer are slightly larger than white tales and live in colder areas. The white tale deer's tale is white on the end and the mule deer's is black. Mule deer have more of a brown gray color and the white tale is more red.
A white-tail, when alarmed, raises its tail up and flashes it like a white flag, warning others, when bounding away. Mule deer don't have this, as they only have a tail with a black tip on the end and large mule-like ears. Black-tail deer have black tails, obviously.
White-tailed deer have a number of differences from elk. For one they're smaller, they use their tail as a white flag to let others know danger's near, they don't have the darker "mane" around their necks like elk do, nor do they have the lighter patch on their rumps. Bucks have smaller antlers that do not extend out long beyond their heads like with bull elk, nor do they have the distinguishable whistling bugle that bull elk make during mating season. Elk are also more grazers than browsers, though both species do browse and graze.
It's stomach allows it to eat some things humans can not! And they have white tails.
Fallow deer have spots throughout their lives; white-tailed deer only have spots as fawns, then lose them when they start to get near the yearling stage.
